This year’s Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood offered a full spectrum of colorful designer gowns on the red carpet. Standing out for their bold and dark hues were an assortment of jewel-toned gowns which drew major attention to the stars who wore them.
While some of these deep color schemes were lovely and flattering, there were a couple that had us scratching our heads. We gathered up six ladies in gemstone tones from the red carpet, and couldn’t help but wonder if their stylists conspired together for these similar-looking Oscars ensembles.
It seems like if you’re going to go with bold, jewel-toned colors on the red carpet, you might as well find a twin to match.
Let’s start with the deep purple twins— Reese Witherspoon & Tina Fey:

Was this planned? These two lovely ladies walked the red carpet in regal purple strapless gowns that both feature form-fitting bodices, fishtail designs, and slightly-awkward bunches of fabric that hung loose from their lower backs.
Reese Witherspoon’s gown is a silk Oscar de la Renta custom creation featuring topstitch detail and an interesting exposed black bustino. It’s a nice enough look on the 39-year-old star, but we do find the bright purple taffeta a bit tacky. The “Hot Pursuit” actress styled the gown with Jimmy Choo platform sandals (which were unfortunately hidden under all that purple), a Judith Leiber clutch, and a dazzling assortment of Tiffany & Co. jewels.
In a similar getup, sans the tacky taffeta, was Tina Fey in an elegant Atelier Versace gown, featuring a body-hugging silhouette and floor-trailing tulle skirt. The 45-year-old actress looked poised and elegant in this simple yet bold-colored gown. We think it was a safe choice for the brunette star, but we would have preferred to see her in something a little more exciting style-wise. She added a pair of Roger Vivier shoes and bag of the same brand, and Bvlgari diamond and sapphire jewelry.
Both Reese and Tina were presenters of the evening, and if it weren’t for the difference in hair color, it would be difficult to tell these purple-clad stars apart!
Next up, in hues of sapphire— Naomi Watts & Sofia Vergara:

Naomi, dear, you’re a gem worthy of gem-stone colors. And Sofia, we love this color, but aren’t you a bit old for prom?
Both of these actresses sported youthful looks, but we’re a little more drawn to Naomi’s style. Perhaps it’s because her strapless Armani Privé gown features waves of sequins in navy and purple hues that shimmer down the fishtail gown with mermaid-like grace. Too youthful? Maybe, but we have to hand it to the 47-year-old for playing up her figure while also maintaining her notorious class in this color-variation gown that’s every little girl’s dress-up dream.
On the other side, there’s the ever-beautiful Sofia Vergara. Her Marchesa gown showed off her well-endowed figure with enough gathered fabric to stay on the elegant and tasteful side of sexy— a refreshing change from her standard skin-baring style. We love the sweetheart neckline, but the mess of tulle and the bodice’s silky and beaded sections just bring back bad memories from high school dances.
Naomi styled her gown with a diamond collar of Bvlgari jewels, a clutch of the same designer, and sported a side-parted ‘do and bright red lips. Sofia added some sparkle with chandelier earrings and a statement ring by Lorraine Schwartz.
And finally, the slinky emerald duo— Saoirse Ronan & Rachel McAdams:

Color? Check. Slinky fabric? Check. Deep back exposure? Check. Side Boob? Check.
Again, we have to wonder, do these two have the same stylist? We’re not complaining, though, as these blonde beauties looked absolutely stunning in their forest green gowns.
Rachel McAdams, 37, was a sight to behold in her August Getty creation featuring a backless design, halter top, and thigh-high split. Proving that green is truly her color, the “Spotlight” actress put her enviable figure on display in the silky gown that hung playfully to her curves. She styled her blonde locks in an updo and accessorized with jewelry from Niwaka Collection and some silver strappy Stuart Weitzman platform sandals.
Saoirse Ronan sparkled in comparison to her emerald-bearing twin, in a Calvin Klein Collection sequined dress that features a plunging neckline and velvet straps. The 21-year-old “Brooklyn” star looked sultry and gorgeous in the body-skimming number, which she accessorized with Chopard jewelry, and a pair of hidden Roger Vivier shoes.
Even though neither of these Oscar nominees took home an award, they both won major style points for their emerald gowns.
