In 2014, Charlize Theron starred in the western comedy film A Million Ways to Die in the West, playing the wife of an infamous outlaw.

The film was directed by Seth MacFarlane and received mixed reviews from critics, but it was a moderate box office success, grossing over $80 million worldwide against a budget of $40 million.

Charlize Theron shaved her head for her role as Imperator Furiosa in the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road and had to wear a wig for her role as Anna Barnes-Leatherwood, Clinch Leatherwood’s (Liam Neeson) rebellious wife.

Playing the wife of Liam Neeson’s character, Charlize Theron and Liam Neeson would later star together in the American science fiction comedy-drama television series The Orville.

Charlize Theron expressed her eagerness to join the cast of Seth MacFarlane’s comedy western film, “A Million Ways To Die In The West,” as she had longed for comedic roles after two decades of primarily dark dramas and action films, finding the shift in genre liberating.

“I’ve been interested in comedy for a while, but it’s been tricky because audiences know me so well doing something very different,” she said in an interview.

“In fact, what also interests me is odd comedy. Those are very rare. The combination of this script and Seth directing was a slam dunk for me. I started begging instantly. I closed the script and started begging.”

“I loved watching this movie, because it felt like I was actually seeing myself,” she revealed.

“I think there’s an idea that actors have, where unless you’re completely transforming and disappearing into a character, you’re not really doing your job. “There was something refreshing after 20 years of doing this; watching a movie, seeing and hearing myself and feeling like that was enough to tell that narrative – that there’s nothing wrong with that.”
